Wan Chai, known as "Ha Wan", began as a small cove with a quiet sandy bay, it was a small fishing community home to just a handful of villagers. During the early colonial days, demand for labour attracted those on the fringes of society such as coolies, rickshaw boys and hawkers to set up home in Wan Chai. From its humble beginnings, Wan Chai is now Hong Kong's second business district with many modern sky scraping office towers, world class convention facilities and trendy entertainment areas.
